The Burning of Kingston comes this weekend
The annual remembrance of one of the darkest days in Kingston’s history seems to grow in scope every year. The event obviously doesn’t celebrate death and destruction, even if its logo of a colonial building engulfed in flames seems an odd icon for a fun festival. In fact, “The Burning of Kingston” is the ultimate attention-getter for a topic that isn’t quite as sexy: the history of the Revolutionary War.
The main event happens Saturday at 3pm, as street battles by colonial reenactors will rage throughout Uptown Kingston. But there’s plenty going on before and after the battle throughout the weekend, including film screenings, history talks, jazz performances, cemetery tours, and even a colonial ball and reception.

Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase at Bearsville Center
While most of us will be outside this weekend watching the leaves change and fall, many area musicians and music-lovers will be indoors staring at wood that has long since shed its foliage. The venerable Woodstock Invitational Luthiers Showcase returns this weekend with a phalanx of gifted musicians and instrument makers, armed with stunning-sounding, exquisitely constructed stringed instruments.
The event is part instrument showcase, part musicians’ clinic, and part performance festival. The live music lineup is formidable and includes a Friday kick-off concert at Colony with giants of acoustic guitar: Peter Janson, Tony McManus, Sean McGowan, Preston Reed and Adam Miller. Throughout the weekend, Happy Traum will teach fingerpicking, Tim Farrell will celebrate Woodstock’s musical legacy with a fingerstyle arrangement of The Band’s “The Weight”, and Vicki Genfan, the “Queen of Open Tunings”, will demonstrate the power of straying from standard tuning.

52 musicians to perform on their porches in Upstate NY this Saturday
Picture this: One town full of 52 bands and musicians just rocking out on their porches, many at the same time. Believe it or not, this is a real thing. It’s called Porchfest, it’s in Rhinebeck this Saturday, and you haven’t seen (or heard) anything like it.
The lineup is packed with local artists from every genre – we’re not just talking acoustic singer-songwriters, there will be full rock bands, a washboard jazz group, klezmer artists, and a Tom Petty cover band, just to name a few.
The Porchfest website (rbkporchfest.com) is an essential companion to your adventure, as it features a map of each location including a picture of each porch – don’t worry, they’re all within a few blocks of each other.
On hand to fuel your walk will be a bevy of local food trucks: Carole’s Hot Dogs, Djay’s Fish Fry, Forno Rosso Wood Fired Pizza, Pura Vida Kettle Corn, Rhinebeck Crew-Tacos, Spacey Tracy’s Pickles and Thailicious.

Hudson Valley’s premiere pickle fest is this Sunday
Is it just me or does it seem to you like there’s been a gazillion festivals this year? If festival fatigue is setting in, we recommend mustering one last burst of energy to relish the Rosendale International Pickle Festival this Sunday.
While the Hudson Valley Garlic Festival in Saugerties is our area’s biggest, longest-running food fest, the Pickle Festival is the clear runner-up, this being the 26th year it’s been held. If you think you’ve seen it all with regards to pickles, you’re sourly mistaken. Over 100 vendors will be present, and you won’t have to only ingest cucumbers, salt, vinegar and spices – there will be a diverse range of food and baked goods to compliment the cukes. You’ll also find craft, art and fashion merchants, some no doubt cringing as patrons fondle their wares with pungent digits.
Don’t miss the pickle contests – there will of course be awards for each category of pickles, but also a pickle eating contest, a pickle juice drinking contest, and even pickle tossing.

Haunted Huguenot Street in New Paltz
In a thrilling twist of events, New Paltz’s historic Huguenot Street will soon unravel a nearly 250-year-old mystery for the brave and curious. This October, an interactive theater experience promises to engage visitors in the true and chilling tale of the Budd family’s attempted poisoning — an enigma that once captivated the region, only to nearly vanish from the annals of history.
The theatrical journey kicks off on Fri., Oct. 13 at the DuBois Fort Visitor Center. Starting from 5pm, tours will embark hourly with the final group setting out at 8pm. For those itching for an encore, tours will also run on Sat., Oct. 14, Fri., Oct. 20 to Sat., Oct. 21, and Fri., Oct. 27 to Sun., Oct. 29. A slight change for the last date: on Sun., Oct. 29, tours will begin a tad earlier, from 3pm to 6pm.
“Visitors who attend this program will participate in solving the mystery of who poisoned the Budd family,” shared an event organizer. But a word of caution — the program delves deep into topics of death and murder, so children below 13 should be accompanied by adults.

The peak of fall is upon us, and there are few autumnal locales more stunning than Ashokan Center in Olivebridge. This Sunday, bring the whole family on a wooded retreat featuring fresh apple cider pressing, pumpkin painting, blacksmithing, broommaking, hayrides, live music (Jude Roberts, Blue Gardenia and Adrea Maddox & The Hey Y’Alls), seasonal food and guided hikes.
