Kingston High School football
A strange season of football got a little stranger last week as Kingston High School saw one game canceled due to Covid-19 protocols and another end in the team’s first proper win in nearly a year-and-a-half.
The Tigers intended to host Red Hook at Dietz Stadium on Tuesday, March 30, but a member of the Raiders tested positive for the Coronavirus canceling the game. Kingston then welcomed Section 9 opponent FDR to town on Friday, April 2, winning 13-12 in a Senior Night thriller, the team’s first victory since a season-ending win against Warwick on October 30, 2019; the entire 2020 campaign was canceled due to Covid, and the “Fall II” season is being played this spring.
All the scoring was done in the first half of the game, as Kingston quarterback Dylan Noble connected with ShaCorey Jones on a pair of touchdowns and Tyler Longo split the uprights for a crucial point-after kick.
With the scoring over in the first half, it fell upon the Kingston defense to maintain the slim lead and stop Presidents’ quarterback Jayden Bennett from upending their efforts. Bennett earned 188 yards on 20 rushes and caught a pair of passes, scoring one touchdown on the ground and one through the air in the process. The Tigers stopped a third quarter deep drive by Roosevelt at their own 30 just inches away from a first down.
Noble went 6-of-10 for 93 yards, including a 51-yard touchdown toss to Jones to tie the game 12-12 with just over a minute left in the first half. Longo’s extra point proved to be the game winner. Jones had three catches for 75 yards and picked up 33 ground yards on seven rushes. Isaiah Thomas led the Tigers with 71 rushing yards on eight attempts.
The Tigers have seen two games canceled through no fault of their own, but are still 1-1 on the season. They aren’t scheduled to play again until they host Newburgh Free Academy on Friday, April 16 to wrap the season.
Kingston boys’ soccer
The Kingston High School varsity boys’ soccer team had a dominant 8-1 win over Middletown at Dietz Stadium last Monday in Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association action.

The New Paltz girls’ swim team dropped a 118-61 meet at Valley Central on Thursday, April 1, with Lydia Brutvan excelling with a pair of individual wins. Quinn Ratynski took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.87) and Zofia Trzewik-Quinn placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.10) for New Paltz.
