With work underway on the reconstruction project for the portion of James St. in Rosendale that was eroded by flooding during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, the process appears to have experienced a setback. On Saturday, February 10, an announcement was posted on the Town of Rosendale website stating, “James Street sinkhole is settling and Highway [Department] had to do additional work today. We are keeping the road closed from Parkcrest to Madeline Lane. No through traffic till further notice.”
Then, on Monday, Feb. 12, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Department issued an advisory to motorists to “avoid James Street in Rosendale due to roadway collapse. Road closed between Parkcrest and Madeline. There will be barriers set up shortly.”
We were unable to reach Rosendale officials to determine whether or not the “collapse” was a planned component of the New York Rising-funded project to shore up the Rondout Creek embankment and replace inadequate storm drains underlying the pavement of James Street, serving the Rosendale Recreation Center and the Parkcrest housing development. Commuters through Rosendale are advised to use alternate routes until reopening of James Street is announced on the town website.
