New Paltz senior is named a scholar in the Regeneron Science Talent Search
New Paltz High School senior Joseph Birnbaum has been named a scholar in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search for his groundbreaking research on wildfire intensity and its effects on the regeneration of the endangered dwarf pitch pine. His research paper, titled The Effects of Wildfire Intensity on the Regeneration of Pinus Rigida Mill (Pitch Pine) on the Shawangunk Ridge, earned him a place among the top 300 scholars from a highly competitive pool of nearly 2,500 entrants representing 795 American and international high schools and homeschools.
New Paltz Democratic Committee seeks village trustee candidates
The New Paltz Democratic Committee is seeking candidates for trustee on the village board. There will be two trustee seats available this election. If the village votes for dissolution, then the seats will be for a one-year term. If the village does not vote for dissolution, then the seats will be for a four-year term. As a trustee of the Village of New Paltz, a resident is afforded an opportunity to become more involved and to contribute to a unique village.

Workshop to help children find comfort with death and grief
Children of all ages are invited to join local authors Mala Hoffman and Lucy Moran as they present a program featuring creative exercises from their newly published book Dispelling the Shadow: Activities Exploring Life and Death with Young People. The event will be held on Saturday, February 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Gardiner Library, 133 Farmers Turnpike.Â
Dispelling the Shadow provides a framework that includes activities, discussion prompts and resources. It can serve as a guide to allow young people at varying age levels to begin to confront death and grief with compassion and curiosity. The workshop will include several activity stations and resources for parents and caregivers will be shared.
Hoffman is an educator with an MA in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University with nearly two decades of teaching experience. Her articles on educational issues have appeared in Gifted Child Today as well as other journals and newspapers. She is also a published poet.
Moran is a certified holistic sex educator and loss companion. She is a graduate of the Institute of Sexuality Education and Enlightenment (ISEE) and The Dying Years End of Life Doula training. She is a member of the National End of Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) and is currently focused on supporting people through the complexity of pregnancy loss.

Calling artists of all agesÂ
The Village of New Paltz Design Review Board/Historic Preservation Commission’s eleventh annual art show, held in partnership with Elting Memorial Library, will run for two months again this year, through May and June.
The event continues the tradition of showcasing two-dimensional works depicting local and area historic landmarks, architectural details and landscapes, as well as impressions of life within a historic context, and preservation’s role in promoting equality and justice.
Artists are invited to submit up to three pieces in any two of the following categories:Â
Painting (watercolor, oil, acrylic, gouache, tempera); drawing/mixed media (color or graphite pencil, ink, pastel, charcoal, chalk, crayon, marker or a combination of different mediums; textiles; collages); photography (black and white or color photos).
