Offensive explosion powers Stallions to season-opening win over Oneonta

A 13-run night powered the Saugerties Stallions (1-0) to an opening night 13-9 win over the Oneonta Outlaws (0-1) on Thursday at Cantine Field. (John Ianelli and Chris Whittaker)

The Saugerties Stallions are riding a three-game winning streak after felling the Glens Falls Dragons 11-2 at Cantine Field in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) on Saturday, June 12.

Pitcher Dom Marcoccio (Wofford College) hurled four shutout innings in the win, punching out the first eight batters he faced, including three by strikeout.

The Stallions struck early on offense, with Andrew Wilhite (University of Minnesota) smacking an RBI single in the home half of the first inning. Saugerties added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second, with Tyler Kelder (St. Bonaventure University) capping the scoring by earning a bases loaded walk. Colin Mackle (Marist College) added an RBI double in the fourth to give Saugerties a 4-0 lead. The Stallions broke the game open in the home half of the seventh when Kelder scored on a passed ball, followed by two-RBI single by Richie Cimpric (Franklin Pierce University).

Saugerties had eight hits and 12 walks in the lopsided win over the Dragons, highlighted by Gene Napolitano (Marist College) smacking a two-run homer, doubles by Kelder and Mackle, and three walks apiece by Kelder and Gunner Gouldsmith (Washington State University).

The Stallions are 7-3 on the season and in second place of the PGCBL’s East Division.
