Offensive explosion powers Stallions to season-opening win over Oneonta

The Saugerties Stallions have opened the first few days of its 2021 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL) campaign with a 3-1 record, starting with a wild 13-9 home win over the Oneonta Outlaws on Thursday, June 3.

The Stallions trailed the Outlaws 3-2 and 6-5 in the game before the home team took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, three courtesy a fielding error by Mark Keaton. Saugerties added three runs in the seventh to seal the deal.

Starting pitcher Austin Cole (The College of Saint Rose) went two innings for the Stallions, giving up one hit and a pair of runs. Richie Cimpric (Franklin Pierce) earned the win, giving up four hits and striking out two over three innings of work.

John Stevenson (Louisiana State, double, single, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Kip Fougerousse (2 hits, 3 RBI, run), Albert Jennings (Washington State University, 2 hits, run) and Gene Napolitano (Marist, 2 hits, 3 runs) keyed the Stallions’ offense.

Last Friday, the Stallions traveled to Glens Falls, winning 4-3 after untying a knot with a run in the top of the eighth. Jack Walker (Indiana University) earned the win, striking out five in 2 1/3 innings of relief.

Fritz Genther (Virginia Tech, triple, 2 runs), Jakob Marquez (Washington State, double, 2 RBI), Gunner Gouldsmith (Washington State, 2 singles, run) and Cimpric (single, RBI) helped the Saugerties offense.

Saugerties split a road double-header against the Albany Dutchmen on Saturday, falling 3-0 in the opener and taking the nightcap 4-1. The first game was a pitchers’ duel, with Albany’s Tom Kretzler’s fourth inning 3-run homer off Stallions starter Bryce Reimer (Bucknell) the sole spasm of scoring. Reimer pitched well in defeat, striking out three and giving up three hits and two earned runs over five innings.

Genther (2 singles) and Stevenson (single) accounted for all three Saugerties hits.

There were fewer overall hits in the second game, with all four coming in the crucial third inning for the Stallions, capped by a three-run homer by Marquez. Fougerousse (double, single, run), Genther (single, run) and Gouldsmith (3 walks, run) also contributed.

Zach Byron (Wofford) allowed two hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings of work to earn the win for Saugerties. Jarek Woodward was perfect for 1 1/3 innings to pick up the save.

The Stallions have a busy week ahead, with home games at Cantine Field on Wednesday, June 9 (Glens Falls Dragons), Friday, June 11 (Albany Dragons) and Saturday, June 12 (Glens Falls). They’re also on the road against the Amsterdam Mohawks and Oneonta Outlaws on Tuesday and Thursday respectively.
