Kingston High School senior Cameron Fairley earned his way into the New York State Public High School Athletic Association swimming and diving tournament by virtue of his performance in last week’s Section IX qualifying meet at Valley Central. Fairley will compete in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle.
Fairley qualified in the 200 free during a preliminary heat on Thursday, February 21 during the sectional meet at Valley Central High School, finishing with a time of 1:47.28. He improved on that time during Saturday’s competition, finishing in third place in 1:46.64. Also on Saturday, Fairley placed fourth in the 500 free with a time of 4:52.32, also good enough to earn the state bid.
Rondout Valley senior Bryan Chorzempa, who trains with the Tigers and has shadowed the team at events all season, qualified in all events but the breaststroke and diving, and will compete in the backstroke and 200 free at the state tournament. Fairley and Chorzempa will join a contingent of four other local individual swimmers and the New Paltz 200 meter relay squad at the NYSPHSAA meet at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow on Friday, March 6 and Saturday, March 7.
