On Friday, July 12 a nationwide protest called Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps “will bring thousands of people across the United States to detention camps across the country, into the streets and at Congressional buildings to protest the inhumane and dehumanizing conditions,” according to organizers.
In Kingston, a rally will be held at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 420 Broadway. There will be a variety of speakers from the community, including faith leaders and affected residents. Tin Horn Uprising will lead the assembled in resistance songs. At 9 p.m., participants, in sync with other events across the country, will hold candles in silent protest.
Participants include Citizen Action of New York – Hudson Valley Chapter, Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, Ulster County Democratic Women’s Committee, Rise Up Kingston, Ulster Immigrant Defense Network, Kingston Tenants Union, Woodstock Immigrant Support, Jewish Voice for Peace, ENJAN of Kingston and Poughkeepsie, NY, A.J. Williams-Myers African Roots Center (Library), U-ACT, The Interfaith Council of Kingston and local community leaders and residents.
