A person was killed in a house fire early Tuesday morning in the town of Esopus, local firefighters said.
According to a press release from the Esopus Fire Department, at 2:28 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, firefighters responded to a call at 719 Old Post Road. When they got there, within five minutes of the initial call, they found a “well involved’ fire and were told someone was still inside. Firefighters “battled heavy fire conditions” and found the person, but the person had already “succumbed to injuries sustained in the fire,” the release stated. The name of the deceased had not been released as of Tuesday afternoon. Two other occupants were able to safely evacuate and were evaluated by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad. The incident is currently being investigated by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office in cooperation with the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit.
Esopus Firefighters were assisted by the Rifton, Port Ewen, Highland, New Paltz, Milton, St. Remy, Tillson and Kingston fire departments as well as the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Mobile Life Support, New Paltz Rescue, Hurley Fire & Rescue, Ulster County Fire Coordinators Office, Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit, the Ulster County sheriff’s office and the state police.
