Joseph “Joe” Kenney

Joseph Kenney, age 94 years young, passed away on September 25, 2021 with his youngest son Jim Kenney by his side, after living a long and full life.

Joe was born on July 8, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York as one of 11 brothers and sisters. At age 17, with WWII raging, Joe enlisted in the US Navy as a gunners mate and served onboard the USS John Hood (DD-655), a Fletcher-class destroyer, where they sailed on and up to the Aleutian Islands for duty with the North Pacific Fleet until the end of the war.

After completing his service and returning to Brooklyn, Joe met the love of his life, Dorothy Marie Johnson. They married and moved to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York to start their family. Joe was a member of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades for almost 30 years; where he completed his career at age 67.

Joe was an active member of the American Legion where he regularly [and totally enjoyed] meeting with his friends and shipmates to reminisce of old days gone by.

Joseph is predeceased by his wife Dorothy Marie Johnson of 67 years, and is survived by his three sons and their wives, Jim & Mary Kenney, Joseph & Judi Kenney and Gregory & Linda Kenney; and 6 grandchildren, Sean and Michael, Jessica and Ally and Christy and Patrick.

Joseph Kenney was truly part of the Greatest Generation and will be forever missed but never forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held at the Church of the Holy Redeemer in Palm City at a future date. In leu of Flowers, Joseph request donations be made to the Saint Judes Hospitals for Children.
