Jay Warren Cohen

Jay Warren Cohen, 77, of California Quarry Road, died on Thursday, April 27, 2023.

Jay was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Harry and Laura Reiss Cohen. He grew up in Brownsville Brooklyn, in a loving, extended family with his six aunts and their husbands, one uncle and his wife, and thirteen cousins. Jay attended Tilden High School and later Brooklyn College, graduating to work as a math teacher in Williamsburg and later St. Croix. He also worked for the Department of Transportation researching traffic patterns that eventually led to the law allowing for a right turn on red. Jay later worked for IBM for many years marketing their products in the Asia Pacific region, and traveled the world.

A longtime Woodstock resident, Jay kept a beautiful home on Overlook Mountain where he was a devoted caretaker of the land, a great chef and a generous host to many friends who visited over the years. Jay was active in the local community and volunteered on the Town of Woodstock Tree Committee. Jay adored his two dogs, Jojo and Thomas; at one time campaigning for Jojo to become town supervisor (Jojo received 44 votes). Jay was an intelligent and kind man, a devoted and thoughtful friend, and was beloved by many.

Survivors of Jay’s family include Lester, Nancy and Eric Cohen, Betsy and Matthew Immergut, and Ivan Visser.
His Graveside Funeral Service was held Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Woodstock Artist Cemetery. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting LasherFH.com.
