David Menzies

David Menzies passed away suddenly and peacefully on October 7, 2025 at the age of 91. Dave lived a happy and contented life in his home until the very end. David was born on August 14, 1934 in Brooklyn to Alice Sharkey Menzies and William Menzies. He had one sister, Catherine, and four brothers, Bill, Dan, Jack and Ed. Dave’s life has been marked by his love for family, his creative spirit in both his professional and personal endeavors, and his steadfast commitment to his work.

Dave’s career began when, as a young man, he got a job as a data processor in NYC. His work ethic led him into a solid career in computer programming, first with IBM and then with Philips at Ferroxcube in Saugerties, where he dedicated more than 25 years of service. Even after his retirement, Dave then continued to apply his programming skills at Woodstock Chimes. He was a pioneer in the early years of new creative uses of the computer with his Amiga.

An active and cherished member of his community, Dave’s commitment to public service was evident in his political activism. He was a proud, progressive Democrat and staunch supporter of Maurice Hinchey in Saugerties, where he lived with his first wife, Elin Menzies, and their three children. His drive for positive change led him to play a key role in organizing the local Green Party. Dave’s passion for his community was further demonstrated with his involvement in both the Town of Saugerties and the Town of Woodstock politics, at one time running for Woodstock Supervisor.

David’s creativity led him to become a videographer long before it became a popular hobby He filmed countless town meetings, festivals, weddings, Santa on Christmas Eve and other special events, preserving memories for many. David was the official videographer for every single Performing Arts of Woodstock production for fifty years.

His involvement with the local access cable TV station, where he hosted and filmed a local political commentary show weekly and then played it on local access TV for fifteen years was a testament to his commitment to community engagement.

David is survived by his life partner of forty years, Patricia Jackson of Woodstock; his daughter, Holly Menzies of California; his son, Scott Menzies, and Scott’s wife, Eva Behr, of California; his granddaughters, Lucia and Manix; his great-granddaughter, Charlotte; his sister and brother-in-law, Catherine and George Grenier of Delanson, NY; his sister-in-law, Madeleine Menzies of Toms River, NJ and many beloved nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his parents, William and Alice Sharkey Menzies; his son, Christopher Menzies; his son-in-law, Michael Smith; and his brothers, William, Daniel, Jack, and Edward Menzies.

David J. Menzies lived a life full of love, laughter, commitment and service. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will be cherished. He will be deeply missed, but the impact of his life’s work and the warmth of his spirit will endure in the hearts of his family, friends, and the lives he touched. His memorial service will be announced as soon as possible, and burial will be in the Woodstock Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Woodstock Rescue Squad, an invaluable service provided to Woodstock by volunteers. David walked the Comeau Trails for years when younger, donations might also be made to Comeau Stewardship T+A (Trails Restoration Fund) or to Woodstock Meals on Wheels. You can share your special memory, photo, or condolence on Dave’s Tribute Wall at www.gormleyfuneralhome.com  as well as at the memorial.
