When police posted on Facebook on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 22, alerting residents that Canoe Hill Road between North Street and Mike Kraut Road was temporarily closed following a motor vehicle accident, it foreshadowed a tragedy.
According to a statement to the Daily Freeman by Saugerties police, a 34-year-old Philmont man left the roadway and hit a tree with his vehicle, after which a witness called 911 and attempted to assist. He was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston where he succumbed to his injuries.
The crash is under investigation.
