New Paltz High School senior Joseph Birnbaum has been named a scholar in the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search for his groundbreaking research on wildfire intensity and its effects on the regeneration of the endangered dwarf pitch pine. His research paper, titled The Effects of Wildfire Intensity on the Regeneration of Pinus Rigida Mill (Pitch Pine) on the Shawangunk Ridge, earned him a place among the top 300 scholars from a highly competitive pool of nearly 2,500 entrants representing 795 American and international high schools and homeschools.

Please contact Dawn Winchester at 917-660-1269 with any questions.

Workshop to help children find comfort with death and grief

Children of all ages are invited to join local authors Mala Hoffman and Lucy Moran as they present a program featuring creative exercises from their newly published book Dispelling the Shadow: Activities Exploring Life and Death with Young People. The event will be held on Saturday, February 22 from 1 to 3 p.m. Gardiner Library, 133 Farmers Turnpike.

Dispelling the Shadow provides a framework that includes activities, discussion prompts and resources. It can serve as a guide to allow young people at varying age levels to begin to confront death and grief with compassion and curiosity. The workshop will include several activity stations and resources for parents and caregivers will be shared.

Hoffman is an educator with an MA in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University with nearly two decades of teaching experience. Her articles on educational issues have appeared in Gifted Child Today as well as other journals and newspapers. She is also a published poet.

Moran is a certified holistic sex educator and loss companion. She is a graduate of the Institute of Sexuality Education and Enlightenment (ISEE) and The Dying Years End of Life Doula training. She is a member of the National End of Life Doula Alliance (NEDA) and is currently focused on supporting people through the complexity of pregnancy loss.

For more information or to register for the event, contact the Gardiner Library or go to https://gardinerlibrary.libcal.com/event/13622902.
