Ulster Sheriff jumps into freezing waters with officers for a cause

Call it a cold case — members of the Ulster County Police Department took an icy plunge in the 15th Annual Subzero Heroes event last Saturday at Berean Lake in Highland. Sheriff Juan Figueroa, Undersheriff James Mullen, and Lieutenant Collin Reynolds were among those who jumped into frigid water to support efforts in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

The event’s safety was overseen by the In-Water Rescue team, which included personnel from the Ulster County Police, the Town of New Paltz Police Department, and the Town of Rosendale Police Department. The team was responsible for cutting a hole in the ice and maintaining participant safety throughout the event. Organizers praised the event’s success and expressed excitement for next year’s gathering.

Subzero Heroes, organized by the Alzheimer’s Association, began in February 2010 with 25 participants diving into a frozen lake and about 80 spectators cheering them on. Over the years, the event has grown significantly, becoming one of the organization’s most prominent fundraisers. It attracts widespread media attention, further raising awareness about Alzheimer’s.

Funds generated through Subzero Heroes contribute to the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission of providing care and support to the more than six million Americans living with the disease, while also advancing research efforts to combat it.
