That low-flying helicopter many Woodstockers heard Saturday afternoon was taking an injured hiker off Overlook Mountain.
Woodstock firefighters, EMTs and DEC forest rangers went up Overlook Mountain Saturday, October 12 to assist the hiker on the Echo Lake trail about four miles from the Overlook trailhead on Meads Mountain Road, according to the Woodstock Fire Department.
The first responders decided the best way to remove the hiker was by airlift. A state police helicopter hoisted the hiker out of the woods and transported them to the fire department headquarters on Tinker Street. The hiker was then transported to the hospital by a backup ambulance crew.
The Olive Fire Department helped set up the helicopter landing zone. During the rescue, Woodstock firefighters also responded via mutual aid to a fire in West Hurley.
