The New Paltz Regatta returned to the Wallkill River on Sunday, June 9. “This year’s regatta was an overwhelming success!” said event organizer Theresa Fall. “Our community came out in full force for our wacky, decades-long, local-as-it-gets annual tradition! Huge thanks to every single person who built a boat, paraded down Main Street and cheered on the competitors!”

Twelve  boats entered this year’s race, but Fall said that three didn’t show. “We had a great turnout even though it rained until just about parade time,” she said following the race. “There was great spirit and fun and we are expecting even more next year. We are proud of our community for stepping up and keeping the event afloat!”

After being paraded through the streets of downtown New Paltz, the boats were launched from the landing at Sojourner Truth Park on Water Street, with the ultimate goal of staying afloat long enough to pass beyond the Carmine Liberta Bridge. This year’s awards went to: Most Environmentally Friendly — Sturgeon Thunder, That’s So New Paltz — Let the Sunshine In!, Crowd Favorite – New Paltz Youth Program, The Grower Not Showers — The Seamen, Best in Engineering…until it broke – SEASICK, Best Costume/Theme — Dirty Water Dogs, Most Sinkable — The SS Holes (Snugs), Most Nostalgic — Piglets on the Farm, first place — New Paltz Youth Program, second place — Let the Sunshine In!, third place — Coco Loco Paradise Dwellers.
