The Village of Saugerties has been considering various uses for a lot it owns on Montross Street and none have worked out. At the Village Board meeting on Monday, May 3, trustee Donald Hackett had a new proposal – a mini park. “I had a meeting with Rosemary Brackett from the tree commission and we talked about the lot on Montross Street. “The Tree Commission would like to take that over and turn it into a park. We discussed having a landscape architect.”
“I think it’s a great idea,” Hackett said, adding that he had talked to the mayor about it “and he thought it was a good idea.” The cost to the village would be low, we could put in a couple of picnic tables or whatever, so I would like to get the other board members’ feelings about that because we haven’t been using the lot. We went through parking, done research on different stuff and nothing seems to work.”
“I think it’s a great idea,” said trustee Jeannine Mayer. “If it was bigger, I would say we could make part of it a dog park, but I feel the town is working on that and it’s not big enough, so I think it’s a good idea.”
“I think it’s the best idea you’ve had yet,” said trustee Vincent Buono. Mayor Bill Murphy said the trustees had discussed putting pickleball courts on the site, but the village is partnering with the town to put pickleball courts next to the existing tennis courts.
The commission has drawn up some tentative plans for the property, Hackett said, adding that he will be meeting with Brackett and the committee, who has volunteered to take full responsibility for the area. The board voted unanimously to turn the development of the lot over to the Tree Commission and authorized the mayor to go over the plans and work with the commission.
Hackett said that after five years of coming up with tentative solutions and having them not work, it’s good to see the site will be developed well.
