Kingston swimming
The Kingston High School swim team improved to a perfect 5-0 on the season last week, with their wins including a 99-79 victory over undefeated Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association rival Newburgh Free Academy on Wednesday, March 24. As with all meets this season, the battle was undertaken virtually, with each team swimming in their own pools.
Emily McCord was tops for the Tigers, taking the 50-yard freestyle (26.30) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.66). Also winning their individual events were Ali Mitchell (IM, 2:21.64), Caroline Steeves (backstroke, 1:07.38), Mallory Sullivan (500 free, 5:45.90), Ellie Meyer (100 free, 59.02) and Carly Ford (diving, 151.42 points).
Steeves also placed second in the 200 free (2:06.83) and Meyer took second in the 50 free (27.30). Katherine Steeves placed third in both the individual medley (2:32.27) and butterfly (1:08.32).
Kingston football
After dropping their first two games to open their “Fall 2” season, the Kingston High varsity football team returned home to Dietz Stadium on Friday, March 26 and picked up a win in a non-traditional way. Initially scheduled to play Monticello, the Tigers won that game by forfeit when their opponent had to drop out due to Covid-19 protocols after their prior opponent, FDR had a player test positive for the virus.
Instead, the Tigers welcomed Wallkill in a game-condition scrimmage, playing with officials and timing, but without keeping score. The scrimmage came together quickly, with Monticello notifying Kingston of their Covid cancellation on Monday, March 22 and Wallkill stepping in. Because of the brisk rescheduling, it was agreed that the game would be played as a scrimmage only, something the Tigers may have needed with a busy week ahead.
Kingston will next host Red Hook at Dietz Stadium on Tuesday, March 30. They’ll be back in action three days later on their home turf when FDR comes to town.
Kingston girls’ tennis
The Kingston High School girls’ tennis team went 2-1 overall last week, improving to 4-1 on the season thanks to back-to-back road wins. The first came at Minisink Valley, where the Tigers earned a 5-2 win.
Minisink’s Olivia Sirico beat Kingston’s Iris Laves (6-4, 6-0) in first singles, but Aliyah Faircloth evened the odds with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alexandra Tietelbaum. Amelia Loughlin and Julie Chen won by forfeit for the Tigers.
In the only on-court doubles matchup, the Tigers’ Keira Holsapple and Cameryn Fisher beat Molly Witkowski-Olivia Nixon (6-0, 6-0), while Lena Gudmundsen and Felisha Quayum won by forfeit
The second win came on Monday, March 23, when the Tigers swept James I. O’Neill. Three of their wins came via forfeit with the undermanned O’Neill only able to compete on-court in four matchups.
In singles, both Lita Freeman (6-0, 6-1) and Laves (6-4, 6-0) won in straight sets for the Tigers. Kingston was effective in doubles action as well, with Elizabeth Madonna and Faircloth defeating Olivia Bregman and Katelyn Sacra (6-0, 6-0), and Holsapple and Fisher ousting Kaylene Heyman and Nora Nowicki (6-0, 6-0).
The Tigers returned home on Friday, March 26, where they dropped a 5-2 match with Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association opponent Newburgh Free Academy.
Freeman battled Isabella Goings-Perot in a 7-6 (5), 6-2, while Ruby Finch won fourth doubles by forfeit.
The Tigers were swept in straight sets in doubles action, with Newburgh’s Jade Garay and Mila Dixon beating Faircloth and Holsapple (6-4, 6-2), Cora Kerin and Gigi Pollick defeating Cassidy Holsapple and Jade Williams (6-0, 6-2) and Leeh Isaccs and Zara Tranquela ousting Quayum and Sarah Martin (6-0, 6-1)
Saugerties cross country
The Saugerties High School cross country team fared well both individually and collectively at a Mid-Hudson meet held at Tony Williams Park in Highland on Wednesday, March 24, with the Sawyers’ only girls competitors all finishing in the top five.
In the girls’ race, Marcy Candlin finished first with a time of 23:02; she was joined in the top five by fellow Sawyers Anna Gramoglia (4th, 24:09) and Casey Druskin (5th, 24:13). The top five were rounded out by Rondout Valley runners.
On the boys’ side, the Sawyers were led by Evan Sullivan, who finished in second place with a time of 18.38, a minute off the first place time of 17:38 by Rondout’s Matthew Waruch. Also finishing in the top ten for Saugerties were Alex Carter (4th, 20:14), Liam Bock (6th, 21:53), Nino Tuccillo (7th, 22:22), Ryan Huberski (9th, 23:25) and Clinton Seutzman (10th, 23:37).
Ellenville also competed on the boys’ side, but did not field any girls.
Saugerties girls’ soccer
The Saugerties High School varsity girl’s soccer team picked up its first win of the “Fall 2” season on Wednesday, March 24, outlasting visiting Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent F.D.R. in a 3-2 battle.
Savannah Scarpa-Meade, Makenzie Below and Madeline Marricco all scored for the Sawyers. Gabby DeSantis saved eight shots on goal to preserve the win for Saugerties, who improved to 1-3 on the season.
The Sawyers next host MHAL opponent Wallkill on Wednesday, March 30.
Onteora girls’ tennis
The Onteora High School girls’ tennis team is still in search of its first win of the “Fall 2” season after dropping a tough 3-2 match at Red Hook on Thursday, March 25. The Eagles were forced to forfeit a crucial second doubles match due to being undermanned.
After Wini Linham beat Emily Peck 8-0 in first singles, the Eagles rebounded with Sophia Roberts ousting Avis Roszko (8-5) and Eva Donato cruising over Sofia Tecchio (8-1).
In first doubles, Red Hook’s Annabelle Dousharm and Lily Gorczynski beat Onteora’s Sefie Loizou and Thea Millenson-Wilens 8-3.
Onteora girls’ soccer
The Onteora High School varsity girls’ soccer team fell 5-2 at Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Ellenville on Wednesday, March 24, with the game all but decided in the first half hour. Ellenville came out strong, scoring four goals over the first 30 minutes to put the game out of reach.
Credit the Eagles with refusing to quit, as they outscored their host 2-1 over the remainder of the game after falling into a 4-0 hole. Darrah Allison scored on a free kick from 25 yards out to put Onteora on the board, and Analie Ingalsbe hit the back of the net from 12 yards out for the other goal. Eagle’s goalkeeper Ava Lamb had a busy day in goal, turning away seven shots.
Sydney Franza (2 goals) and Gabriela Castro (goal, 2 assists) did the bulk of the damage for Ellenville.
With the loss, the Eagles fell to 1-2 on the season. They’re back in action on Monday, April 5 when they take on MHAL opponent Dover in a road battle.
New Paltz girls’ tennis
The New Paltz High School girls’ tennis team dropped a 4-1 home battle against Marlboro on Friday, March 26. The Huguenots’ win came in second doubles with Sophia Schor and Sami Wong-Pan beating Heather Stelling and Bella De Santis 8-6.
In singles action, Aidan Hoover fell to Sammy Jarros 8-3, while Flavia Drazek (8-0) and Ruthie Crosby-Lizarde (8-4) also had tough outings. The Huguenots’ first doubles tandem of Talia Feinsod and Maggie Lynn put up a valiant fight against Lindsey Stelling and Abigail Shaffer of Marlboro, falling 8-5.
Next up for New Paltz is a visit to Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Ellenville on Tuesday, April 6.
New Paltz volleyball
The New Paltz varsity volleyball team split a pair of Mid-Hudson Athletic League home matches last week.
First, the Huguenots were visited by FDR on Thursday, March 25, winning 3-1. New Paltz won the first two sets 25-19, 25-19, before dropping the third 18-25. The home side rebounded in the fourth with a 25-18 result to earn the victory
Alex Frenz (6 aces, 5 blocks, 10 kills), Francheska Geminiano (2 blocks, 12 kills) and Esve Mullins (8 aces, 11 digs, 20 assists) all contributed in the win. FDR was led by Ana Slater (5 kills, dig), Alana Rider (6 kills, 4 blocks), Gianna Felipe (6 aces, kill, 2 blocks, 18 assists, dig) and Maddy McKenna (4 kills, block, dig).
MHAL opponent Wallkill came to the Huguenots’ gym the following day, emerging with a close 3-2 win. New Paltz won the first game 25-16 before Wallkill responded 25-18, 25-18 over the next two. The Huguenots bounced back with a commanding 25-16 win before falling 22-25 in the crucial tiebreaker. Frenz (3 Blocks, 14 kills), Geminiano (6 blocks, 16 kills), Mullins (4 aces, 9 digs, 36 assists), Natalya Knoth (3 aces, 7 digs, 2 kills) and Lily Sturgis (4 aces, 7 digs, 6 kills) all contributed for New Paltz.
Wallkill was led by Rylee Thomas (16 kills, 4 digs, 2 aces), Allison Kebabjian (23 assists, 2 blocks, 3 digs), Ava Wallingford (7 kills, 5 digs, 2 aces) and Sara Goering (12 digs)
New Paltz is back in action on Wednesday, March 31 when they hit the road for a rematch with Wallkill.
