In the Mood, the 1940s Big Band, song and swing dance revue playing two shows at Poughkeepsie’s Bardavon Opera House this Friday, January 27, got its start back when our nation was lauding the “Greatest Generation” attributes of our half-century memories of America’s World War II involvement. The group kicked off a celebration at the National Archives in Washington, DC, then followed with a massive Constitution Avenue outdoor concert and dance that then landed it a spot on the Clinton inauguration circuit in January 1992.
Everyone raved about the infectiously upbeat atmosphere that In the Mood’s singers and dancers, along with the tight-as-Ellington String of Pearls Big Band Orchestra, brought to their concerts. So they’ve been touring ever since, playing memorable (and toe-tappingly syncopated and highly danceable) tunes by the likes of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, the Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra and others, complete with costumes, hyper choreography and the overall sensibility of one of those great old film clips of radio broadcasts half a century ago.
