Ulster County and Ukraine’s Chernivtsi Region held their first joint agriculture forum as part of a new ‘sister community’ partnership established in April 2025. Farmers, government officials, and cultural leaders from both regions gathered virtually to discuss agriculture’s role in local economies, along with shared challenges and opportunities in farming, agritourism, and sustainability.
Ulster County executive Jen Metzger and legislature chair Peter Criswell led the forum, which included presentations from county officials and local farmers. Participants discussed agricultural practices, government support strategies, and innovative programs such as those in Chernivtsi that connect farming with rehabilitation for soldiers. Ukrainian representatives included members of the Chernivtsi Regional Council, agricultural leaders, and delegates from several political factions.
Additional forums are planned to build on this dialogue and expand into areas like education, arts, and public administration. The recorded session will be made available on Ulster County’s government website.
