The decision to approve a long-sought new Irish Cultural Center on Kingston’s Rondout waterfront district could come as soon as next month, following a recent review of the site plans by the city council. The proposal involves redeveloping a 1.5-acre property that includes a 5,000-square-foot building.
Originally proposed in 2012, the project faced years of delays due to zoning disputes over street frontage, legal challenges from neighbors, and extended regulatory and planning obstacles that stalled construction efforts.
This new approach marks a departure from the group’s initial plan at 32 Abeel Street, which is now intended to become a public open space in collaboration with the city. The 290 East Strand location has been described as more practical and historically connected to the area’s industrial roots and Irish immigrant labor.
