A man was injured during pre-event festivities at the Kingston Artists Soapbox Derby on Sunday, August 17 when the soapbox car he was driving went out of control and crashed into a parked Mazda.
Kingston police said the incident occurred around 1pm on Broadway near Mariner’s Harbor. The driver experienced a malfunction while driving a “1930 Bugatti” replica with a small gas engine and rushed past the finish line, causing a crash that sent the driver to HealthAlliance Hospital. No spectators were harmed.
The car was part of a group of vintage-style, gas-powered miniature vehicles that entertained the crowd before the official derby began. These vehicles are not eligible for the derby itself, which only permits gravity-powered entries.
