The 16th annual Kingston Clean Sweep event resulted in the removal of more than 1.53 tons of litter and yard debris during a three-hour cleanup held on Saturday, May 3, according to the City of Kingston’s Department of Public Works. The initiative mobilized over 175 volunteers representing 25 local organizations spanning civic groups, businesses, schools, and youth programs.
Cleanup efforts stretched from the Washington Avenue railroad crossing through the uptown business area, continuing along the Broadway corridor to the Rondout waterfront. Volunteers also targeted various city parks and numerous side streets, with particular focus on midtown’s west side.
Following the cleanup, city workers promptly collected and weighed the filled bags. In addition to general litter and yard waste, the haul included bulky refuse, car tires, and significant amounts of scrap metal.
Herzog’s Home Center contributed essential materials such as bags and gloves, while a mini-grant from Stewart’s Shops helped fund additional supplies.
Participating groups included community staples like the Kingston Area Library, YMCA, and Kingston Lions, as well as local businesses, advocacy organizations, and schools. The event is organized by the Friends of Historic Kingston with support from the City of Kingston, the Mayor’s Office, and the Department of Public Works.
