Last year’s production of the classic play Dracula at the Widow Jane Mine was a rousing, sold-out success. The combination of the cave’s spooky setting and a well-produced, expertly-acted performance proved irresistible to our local show-going audience. It’s not surprising to see the play is back this fall. What is surprising is how the themes presented in this 1897 book (and subsequent 1924 play) are still relevant to our modern life: Fear of the unknown and the outsider, the tension between modern science and traditional beliefs, and issues of sexuality and gender roles. The cast may be wearing 1920s period costumes, the language may be archaic, the venue may feel ancient, but Dracula can still sink its teeth into your psyche in 2024.
