New Paltz High School volleyball

The New Paltz High School varsity volleyball team’s magical season came to an end in the Class B regional final on Sunday at Millbrook High School. The Section 9 Huguenots (13-4) were swept by Section I champion Hendrick Hudson 25-14, 25-16, 25-16, with the Sailors moving on to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association tournament next week at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls. Hendrick Hudson improved to 25-0 on the season with the win. 

New Paltz led 6-1 in the first set before the Sailors overtook them. In the second set the teams were knotted at 9-9. 

The Huguenots were fresh off a sweep of top-seeded Spackenkill in the Section 9, Class B championship held at West Point on Sunday, November 7, winning 25-22, 25-19, 25-14. 

In that victory, New Paltz was led by Francheska Geminiano (18 kills, 7 blocks, 2 aces), Esve Mullins (25 assists, 8 aces, 5 digs, kill), Lily Sturgis (7 kills) and Jena Russo (4 aces, 3 kills). 

There were no stats available from Sunday’s finale as of press time. 

Cross country

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association cross-country championships were held at Chenango Valley State Park on Saturday, November 13, with a handful of local runners competing. 

Kingston High School senior Luca Maneri placed 57th in the Class A boys’ race with a time of 17:28.20; Maneri was the sole local runner in the Class A race. 

In the girls’ Class B race, New Paltz High School senior Ella Urrico placed 85th with a time of 22:15.80. 

Onteora High School junior Trapper VanDreason placed 64th with a time of 18:31.70 in the boys’ Class C race. His Eagles teammate Mike McCutcheon, a senior, finished in 105th place in 19:47.80. 

Onteora’s Rachel Williams placed 120th in the Class C girls’ race, finishing in 24:51.30.
