The Kingston Area Soccer League
The Kingston Area Soccer League (KASL) was named the Club of the Month for May 2021 by the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), a distinction earned thanks to nominations by volunteers of the KASL’s member league, the East Hudson Youth Soccer League (EHYSL).
The KASL boasts over 400 registered players; with 12 travel teams, including eight boys’ teams with 133 players, and four girls’ teams with 86 players, all under the leadership of Travel Director Nick Malvai.
In a press release, KASL President Juan Jeri said that the league’s participation numbers are usually even higher.
“Our intramural numbers are lower than previous years due to the pandemic, but we expect to go back to our normal numbers of over 300 intramural players,” Jeri said.
The KASL was formerly linked to the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO), but they found their way to the EHYSL two decades ago after registering a pair of teams in search of a higher level of competition. The league uses indoor and outdoor fields at TechCity in Lake Katrine, as well as Dietz Stadium and M. Clifford Miller Middle School. They’re looking forward to playing on fields currently under construction on Kukuk Lane.
The league hosts an annual scholarship program and club recognition dinner, as well as the KASL Kick Start into Spring Indoor Tournament, which signaled the end of winter for five years with participation from over 100 teams. The COVID-19 pandemic forced them to cancel this year’s event, but they hope to see it return in 2022.
“We take pride that we run a very tight tournament where teams are guaranteed to play on time,” Jeri said.
The KASL offers scholarships to five graduating high school seniors who competed or volunteered for the league, and who also played varsity soccer for their high school.
