Kingston High School/Onteora High School girls’ golf
The Onteora High and Kingston High girls’ golf teams faced off last week in Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association competition. The Eagles defeated the Tigers 178-185 at Wiltwyck Golf Club on Wednesday, May 12.
Rachel Williams earned medal honors carding a 55 for Onteora, with Darrah Allison (59) and Luci Leonard (64) also factoring into the result.
Christina Lettre led Kingston with a 58, with Lynea Giebelhaus (60) and Katherine Sevilla (67) also contributing.
Both teams were 2-3 at the end of the day.
The Tigers fared better two days earlier with a 169-175 win over OCIAA opponent Valley Central at Otterkill Golf and Country Club. Lettre again led Kingston with a 50, with Giebelhaus (59) and Sevilla (60) also playing well.
In their first loss of the season, the Vikings were led by Lia Grammar’s 56.
Kingston High School boys’ golf
The Kingston High School boys’ golf team split a pair of Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association matches last week, picking up its first win in the first.
The Tigers hosted winless Middletown at Wiltwyck on Monday, May 10, easily defeating them 245-288. Micah Fox carded a 39 to earn medalist honors for Kingston. Antonio Perez (47), Vlad Olenski (49), Gaetano Frandino (55) and Mike Moughan (55) also contributed.
Middletown was led by Austin Shutter (50) and Ryan Brady (51) in defeat.
The Tigers’ momentum was short-lived as they fell 238-256 two days later when they battled Monroe-Woodbury at Falkirk Golf Club in Central Valley. Fox was again medalist for Kingston with a 42, with Olenski (50), Frandino (53), Perez (53) and Moughan (58) also pitching in.
Monroe’s Billy Smith (44) and Andrew VanWinkle (45) led the home team in victory.
Kingston High School girls’ lacrosse
Kingston High School varsity girls’ lacrosse phenom Norah Prizzi scored her 100th career goal on Wednesday, May 12 in an 18-0 rout of Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association visitor Monroe-Woodbury. Prizzi also added two assists to her ledger.
Nine Tigers scored in the lopsided Senior Night win, including Juliona Montalto (4 goals), Donatella DeCicco (2 goals, 5 assists), Arianna Burns (3 goals, 2 assists), Hannah Timbrouck (goal, 3 assists), Emily Schatzel (goal, assist), Kailey Cook (goal), Abigail Kresser (goal) and Gemma D’Aragona (goal).
Julianne Louie and Kara Houston combined for six saves in the shutout.
Kingston High School boys’ lacrosse
The Kingston High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team crushed Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association rival Newburgh Free Academy 18-3 at Dietz Stadium on Wednesday, May 12.
Tyler Longo (5 goals, 3 assists) and Chad Keyser (5 goals, 2 assists) led the Tigers, with Owen Niles (4 goals, 2 assists), Mason DeLisio (3 goals), Jack Chenault (goal) and Trevor Loughlin (4 assists) also contributing. Kingston goalkeeper Griffin Klan turned away three shots.
Kingston High School track and field
The Kingston High School track and field team was swept at Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association opponent Pine Bush on Tuesday, May 11. The boys’ side fell 88-52, while the girls lost 84-56.
Myles Gordon and Luca Maneri led the Kingston boys with a pair of individual wins apiece. Gordon placed first in the 100 (11.3) and 200 (24.1), while Maneri finished first in the 1,600 (4:50) and 3,200 (10:54). Also winning their events were Joe Cicardi (long jump, 18-1.50) and Jason Deising (high jump, 5-0).
Gordon joined Anthony Henn, Cedric Harrison and Logan Volk in Kingston’s 400 relay win in 47.2 seconds.
On the girls’ team, Ali Mitchell and McKenna Black were tops for the Tigers. Mitchell won the 1,500 (5:17) and 3,000 (10:40), while Black earned victory in the shot put (24-8.50) and discus (66-1).
Kingston also won the girls’ 3,200 relay, with Carla Bautista, Kat Toolan, Eli Meyer and Savannah Nimblette finishing in 11:22.
Kingston High School baseball
The Kingston High School varsity baseball team had a pair of big back-to-back wins last week, their offense amassing 36 runs in the process. The Tigers improved to 6-0 overall on the season.
It began with a visit from Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association opponent Valley Central on Wednesday, May 12, a game won by the Tigers 14-4 after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Kingston overcame an early 3-2 deficit to put the game away, buoyed by five RBI from Jake Crantz, who also stepped in for three shutout relief innings.
The Tigers pulled away in the second inning, scoring four runs and giving themselves a 6-3 advantage. They added eight more in the third inning. James Huben (3 hits, 2 RBI) and Gavin Groppuso (2 RBI) helped key the Kingston win.
The following day the Tigers traveled to Washingtonville, rolling to a 21-0 win, another stopped after five innings by the mercy rule. Kingston compiled 18 hits, with big offensive performances from Jimmy McCardle (double, 2 singles, 6 RBI), Evan Dieter (3 hits, 3 RBI), Steven Freer (3 hits, 3 RBI) and Jacob Bonesteel (2 doubles, 3 RBI).
Dieter, McCardle and Aiden Hobart combined for five innings of two-hit dominance on the mound.
Kingston High School softball
The Kingston High School varsity softball team won a pair of Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association home games last week, beginning with a 5-3 win over Pine Bush on Wednesday, May 12.
Three pitchers combined for the win, with Maggie Habernig earning the win after giving up three runs over three innings. Allisyn Kipp and Paige Bell pitched shutout relief, with the latter earning the save.
Barrett Holsapple (double, 3 RBI), Cadence Sickler (double), Courtney Schwark (2 hits) and Rachel Hoyt (2 hits) keyed the Kingston offense.
The margin of victory was far greater two days later when the Tigers dispatched Newburgh Free Academy 14-2. Habernig had a complete game win for Kingston.
Schwark (3 hits), Brooke Sweeney (2 RBI), Hoyt (2 hits), Grace Terpening (2 hits), and Bell (double, single) contributed to Kingston’s hit parade.
Saugerties High School boys’ tennis
The Saugerties High School boys’ tennis team beat visiting Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Marlboro 4-1 on Tuesday, May 11. The Sawyers split doubles but swept singles competition.
Mrinank Mitra beat Tristan Chapman 8-0; Sebastian Silipo ousted Matt Bishop 8-3; and Mitchell Hart defeated Dylan Gunsett 8-1 in the Sawyer singles sweep. The second doubles tandem of Sahil Sekhon and John Stegmayer clobbered Kevin Mitto and Joe Crane 8-0 for Saugerties.
Saugerties High School baseball
The Saugerties High School varsity baseball team’s record stood at 5-3 after the team split a pair of games at Cantine Field last week.
On Monday, May 10, the Sawyers flattened Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Highland 10-1, with Tristan Mawyin picking up the win with six strikeouts, one walk and two hits in five innings of work. Dylan Norton (3 RBI), Ethan Conrad (triple, 2 RBI) and Matt Murtagh (2 RBI) led the Saugerties offense.
Three days later the Sawyers were on the losing end of a 5-1 result against Marlboro. Conrad collected three hits for Saugerties in a losing effort.
Saugerties High School softball
The Saugerties High School varsity softball team stayed hot with a trio of Mid-Hudson Athletic League wins last week, the first a 19-3 home drubbing over Highland on Monday, May 10.
Amber Banas led the Sawyer hit parade with a home run, a double, a single and six runs batted in. Christie Collins (triple, 2 singles, 3 RBI), Maddy Dodig (home run, 3 RBI), Natalie Vail (3 hits), Sammie Graham (3 hits), McKenna Alberts (2 RBI) and Marena Graham (2 RBI) also contributed.
Lacey Schatzel earned the win on the mound, allowing six hits over five innings of work.
Two days later the Tigers traveled to Red Hook for a comparatively modest victory, winning 6-1 on the back of a 10-strikeout pitching performance by Devin Fitzpatrick. Graham (home run, 2 RBI), Alberts (double, 2 RBI) and Fitzpatrick (double, 2 RBI) keyed the Sawyer offense.
On Thursday, May 13, the Sawyers returned home for a thrilling 16-15 win over Marlboro, which saw the two teams combine for 29 hits and change leads three times and two ties. Saugerties pounded out nine runs in the home half of the fifth inning to take a 15-9 lead, but the Dukes tied it up again in the top of the sixth.
Fitzpatrick, who picked up the win on the mound, helped her own cause with a game-winning double in the bottom of the sixth to bring Dodig home, and then retired the side in the top of the seventh. Fitzpatrick also homered and drove in four runs in the wild Sawyer win.
Vail (3 hits, 2 RBI), Dodig (double, single, 2 RBI), Collins (double, 2 RBI) and Schatzel (double, single, 2 RBI) helped fuel the Saugerties offense.
Saugerties High School/New Paltz High School track
New Paltz High School swept host Saugerties in track and field on Tuesday, May 11. The Huguenots girls beat their Sawyer counterparts 101-40, while the New Paltz boys won 100-41.
Siri Walsh had an outstanding afternoon for New Paltz, winning four individual events. Walsh took first in the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:20.3), the 200 (29.4), the triple-jump (29-2.50) and the pole vault (8-0). Lydia Brutvan also performed well, winning the 1,500 (5:26.2) and the 3,000 (15:10).
Other first place finishes for the New Paltz girls came from Aidan Hoover (100, 13.9), Maggie DiDonna (O400, 1:05), Lora Johnson (long jump, 12-1.50) and Taishan Fontes-Janusz (4-5). The Huguenots also won the 3,200 and 400 relays.
Sawyer girls coming in first place included Maddi Green (100HH, 18.7), Madge Marricco (2:36), Zoe Hartrum (shot put, 26-7) and Mindy Tse (discus, 75-3). Saugerties also won the 1,600 relay.
The New Paltz boys also had athletes winning more than one event, led by Noah Brown’s triple victory in the 110 high hurdles (15.7), triple jump (39-3) and pole vault (12-6). Double winners for the Huguenots included Nikolas Knobloch, who took first in the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:01.7) and 400 (54.5); Clay Gulick, who won the 800 (2:09) and 1,600 (4:48); and Cormac Altman, who took the 100 (11.8) and 200 (25.3). Maxwell Hawkins (3200, 11:50) and Aiden McCrory (long jump, 17-11.75). New Paltz also won the 3,200 boys’ relay.
The Sawyer boys were led by Joe Hartrum, who earned gold in the shot put (44-6) and discus (117-2). Dan MacIsaac (high jump, 6-0) was Saugerties’ other individual winner. The Sawyers also took first in the 400 and 1,600 relays.
Saugerties High School/Onteora High School/New Paltz High School boys’ golf
Three schools within our local coverage crossed paths on the golf course last week, with Saugerties on the losing end of each of the matchups.
On Thursday, May 13, Onteora High School hosted the Sawyers at Woodstock Golf Club, winning 166-183. Avery Burns led the Eagles with a 40, with Adam (41) and Ori (41) Grady, and Adam Williams (44) rounding out the scoring on the winning side.
Ben Fox medaled with a 1-over-par 36, and was joined by Harry Bubel (45), Aero Ferrendino (O49) and Cameron France (53) in the Saugerties scoring.
The following day, Saugerties hosted New Paltz at Rip Van Winkle in Palenville, falling 167-188. Ferrendino led the Sawyers, carding a 42. Fox (43), Mike Salmi (48) and Bubel (55) also factored into the scoring. The Sawyers dropped to 3-4 on the season following the loss to New Paltz.
Oliver Watson shot a medal-winning 3-over-39 for the Huguenots, with Josh Clinton (40), Domenico Mazzella (44) and Loyal Goodermote (44) also contributing. New Paltz is a perfect 8-0 on the season as of press time.
Onteora High School track
Onteora High School split a home track and field meet against Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Marlboro on Wednesday, May 12. The Eagles won the girls battle 77-34 and lost the boys’ side 99-18.
Kate Davis was Onteora’s best athlete of the day, winning four individual events and taking the second leg in the team’s winning performance in the 400 relay. Davis won the 100 (13-4), 200 (time not available), long jump (16-8) and triple jump (31-7). Jasmine Rider won the shot put (30-5) and discus (80-9) for Onteora, while Ella Williams won the 400 intermediate hurdles (1:36) and pole vault (6-0). Luciana Robertson (high jump, 5-4) was also an individual winner for the Eagles. Onteora also won the 3,200 relay in 13:41.
Nelson DelTufo was the sole individual winner for the Eagles, taking the 3,200 in 11:21. He also ran the opening leg of the 3,200 relay, helping his team win in 11:32.
Onteora High School boys’ tennis
Onteora High School’s boys’ tennis team dropped its first battle of the season in a 4-1 home loss to Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Spackenkill. In the contest played on Tuesday, May 11, the two teams split doubles play, while the Spartans swept singles play.
All three singles contests were sweeps, with Noah Stern putting in a solid effort in a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Omar Anwar in third singles. Simon Rands and Analie Ingalsbe handily defeated Matt Canzone and Selamu Gendron 6-0, 6-0 in first doubles for Onteora’s sole win.
New Paltz High School boys’ tennis
New Paltz High School’s boys’ tennis team fell 3-2 at home to Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Red Hook on Tuesday, May 11. The Huguenots won a pair of singles matches but were swept in doubles action.
New Paltz’s Ryan Hovey ousted Jason Swart 6-1, 6-0 in first singles, while his teammate Hawke Kosofsky outlasted Beck Lindholm 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in third singles.
Onteora’s Simon Rands, Lucciana Robertson named MHAL Senior Scholar/Athletes
Simon Rands and Lucciana Robertson were named this year’s Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) Senior Scholar-Athlete Award recipients for Onteora High School.
Rands, who is valedictorian of Onteora’s Class of 2021, was a member of the varsity soccer, tennis and track-and-field teams. His athletic accomplishments include serving as captain of the varsity soccer team since his sophomore year, being honored as Athlete of the Month in September 2019 and being named to the Section 9, Class B Soccer All-Star Team in 2019.
Rands’ extracurricular activities include serving as vice president of the National Honor Society and copyeditor of the school newspaper (The Talon), participating in the Science Olympiad and volunteering for the Ulster Immigrant Defense Network. He will be attending Tufts University, where he plans to focus on Environmental Studies.
Robertson, who has accepted an athletic scholarship from SUNY Binghamton, is ranked 32nd in her class. Onteora’s school recordholder in the high jump, Robertson qualified for the New York State (NYS) Championships in that event three times: twice for spring track (2018 and 2019) and once for winter track (2020). She jumped to a second-place finish in the State meet in 2019, earning a trip to Nationals. At the 2020 NYS Winter Track championships, she came in third, again qualifying for Nationals.
Robertson’s additional athletic accomplishments include making three trips to States with Onteora’s cross-country team, running with Onteora’s four-by-eight-relay team at the 2018 NYS Track & Field Championships and being named to the 2019/2020 All-Star Team in girls’ basketball, as well as being honored with one of this year’s Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) Senior Scholar/Athlete Awards.
Robertson has also excelled outside of sports, qualifying for New York State’s Seal of Biliteracy, serving as a member of the National Honor Society and holding down a part-time job at Dietz Stadium Diner in Kingston.
