Kingston field hockey

The Kingston High School varsity field hockey team’s perfect season under new head coach David Beams continued last week with a pair of massive wins over Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponents. The Tigers outpaced their opponents by a combined score of 19-0.

On Monday, March 15, Kingston hosted Ellenville at Dietz Stadium, rolling to a 12-0 win. Hannah Timbrouck led the charge with a hat trick and a pair of assists, while Norah Prizzi (goal, 3 assists), Kaitlyn Albright (2 goals, assist), Niara Franklin (2 goals), Brooke Geuss (goal, assist), Keeley Savona (goal), Grace Uhl (goal) and Grace Terpening (goal) also contributed.

The Tigers swarmed over Ellenville keeper Hailey Bressard, who while absorbing a lopsided loss did manage to turn away 14 shots on goal. Kingston’s Kara Houston had a comparably easy time in goal, picking up a clean sheet without a single save.

Two days later, Kingston traveled to Onteora, winning 7-0 to retain their dominant start to the season. Albright (2 goals), Timbrouck (2 goals), Prizzi (goal, 3 assists), Franklin (goal) and Terpening (goal) all scored in the victory.

Houston was again unbothered in goal, recording no saves in the shutout win. Mercedes Storey and Alana Wood combined for 16 saves for Onteora.

The Tigers hosted Pawling at Dietz Stadium on Friday, March 19, but no stats were available as of press time. Their next game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 23 at Pine Plains.

Statistics were also unavailable for Onteora’s game at Pine Bush on March 19; the Eagles returned to action on Monday, March 22 with a trip to Coxsackie-Athens (too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One). They’re back home on Tuesday, March 23 when they host MHAL opponent Red Hook.

Kingston girls’ soccer

The Kingston High School varsity girls’ soccer team suffered its first loss of the season last week, falling 3-0 to visiting Valley Central in crossover action on Wednesday, March 17. Kingston keeper Hannah Tampasis put in a solid effort to try and keep the home side in the match, but Nicole Schmidt, Mackenzie Delmonico and Grace Palczewsli all broke through. The loss dropped the Tigers to 2-1-1 on the season.

One day earlier, Kingston traveled to Rondout Valley, winning 6-1 against their Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent. The Tigers were led by Ari Burns’ hat trick and a five-assist afternoon by Delishianna Naccarato. Kingston’s scoring was rounded out by Avery Banbury, Julie Bravo and Dakota Quick. Sasha Beckerman hit the back of the net for the Ganders’ only goal.

Stats from the Tigers’ next match, on their home pitch at Dietz Stadium against non-league opponent Red Hook on Saturday, March 20, were unavailable as of press time. They hosted crossover opponent Washingtonville on Monday, March (too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One). Next up is a visit from league rival Newburgh Free Academy on Wednesday, March 24.

Kingston football

The Kingston High School varsity football team fell to 2-0 on the delayed, shortened season last Friday, with non-league opponent James I. O’Neill playing an uninviting host in a 47-22 result. The Tigers failed to score in their first outing, and much of the offensive damage against O’Neill was done by Kingston’s defense.

Linebacker Dylan Noble brought the Tigers to within a point early, scoring a touchdown on an interception to put his team behind 7-6. Kingston took a temporary lead on the ensuing O’Neill possession, with defensive lineman Shameer Peters earning two points on a safety.

Kingston’s next score came on a Myles Gordon kickoff return, bringing the visitors to within 21-14. But they never got closer from then on, with the Tigers being outscored 26-8 over the second half.

The Tigers are winless one-third of their way through the “Fall II” season, but there is room for hope on the near horizon. They’ll play their final four games of the 2021 campaign at Dietz Stadium, beginning with a visit from league opponent Monticello on Friday, March 26. Four days later they’ll be back on the gridiron when league opponent Red Hook comes to town.

Kingston and Saugerties girls’ tennis

The Kingston High School and Saugerties High School girls’ tennis teams faced off in non-league action last Monday, with the Tigers coming away from their home opener with a 4-1 win. It was the first match of the season for Kingston, while the loss dropped the Sawyers to 1-1 overall.

Lita Freeman went 6-1, 6-0 against Mehal Mitra in first singles to give the Tigers a strong start, but Amy Hoyt tied it up for Saugerties in second singles by defeating Iris Laves 6-1, 6-2. From then on, the Tigers went undefeated, closing out the singles competition with a 6-1, 6-2 win by Elizabeth Madonna over the Sawyers’ Alayna VanNodsdall.

In doubles play, Kingston’s Aliyah Faircloth and Keira Holsapple won 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets over Hannah Hoyt and Marlo Rothe. The final doubles match was a much closer affair, with the Tigers’ Rebecca Finch and Sarah Martin taking Saugerties’ Chloe Turner and Hannah Mills in a three-set 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (10) battle, which ended in a 12-10 tiebreaker.

On Wednesday, March 17, Kingston opened its Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association schedule with a 4-3 win over Cornwall. The Tigers won three of four singles battles and won.

Freeman (6-2, 6-2), Madonna (6-2, 6-0) and Faircloth (6-2, 6-1) each won their singles matchups in straight sets. Cornwall’s Noemi Kazco earned the visiting side its sole singles win with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Laves.

Cornwall’s Macrae Edelen and Natalie Celenlano ousted Keira Holsapple and Camryn Fisher in a tough 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 matchup in first doubles; but Rebecca Finch Sarah Martin clinched it for Kingston by beating Kayla Hughes and Katherine Braccia, 6-2, 6-4. Ava Alter and Ava DiGovanni defeated Kingston’s Lena Gudmundsen Cassiday Holsapple 6-2, 6-4 to close out the day.

The 2-0 Tigers headed to Minisink Valley on Monday, March 22 (too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One).

Next up for the 1-1 Sawyers was a visit from Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Ellenville on Monday, March 22. Saugerties travels to Onteora the following day for more MHAL action.

Kingston volleyball

The KHS varsity volleyball team shook off a season-opening loss last week with a wild five-set win against Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association opponent Washingtonville at Camp Grace on Friday, March 19.

The Tigers looked strong early, moving ahead with 25-15, 25-17 wins before the Wizards came back with 26-24 and 25-22 wins to tie it up. Kingston showed their mettle in the rubber set with a 25-15 win.

Ryleigh Purvis (24 assists, 2 aces, kill), Jamie Kuehn (8 kills, 2 blocks) and Julia Jankowski (21 digs, 4 kills, 6 aces), Adriana Montalto (6 kills, 5 digs, 2 aces), Cady Sickler (10 digs, 2 aces), Cristina Chinea (4 kills, 2 digs) and Alanna Rolph (3 kills, block) all contributed to the hard-fought win.

Onteora boys’ soccer

The Onteora High School varsity boys’ soccer team dropped a pair of games last week to open their “Fall II” season, falling by a combined 8-1 margin.

The Eagles hosted Mid-Hudson Athletic League opponent Ellenville on Monday, March 15, losing 2-0 in a game that went scoreless into the second half. At roughly the 50-minute mark, Ellenville’s Gavin Baxter scored the first of his pair of goals off an assist from Kawshar Biswas to take the lead. Baxter punched in a penalty kick five minutes later to slam the door shut on the Eagles. Jackson Scanlon did yeoman’s work in goal for Onteora, saving seven shots, with six coming in a second-half flurry.

Two days later, the Eagles traveled to Kingston’s Dietz Stadium to take on MHAL opponent Mount Academy, falling 6-1 in a rough outing. Gio Flores kept Onteora from being shut out with the team’s first goal of the young season. Scanlon had another busy afternoon in goal, turning away six Mount Academy shots.

Mount Academy — also called the Eagles — were led by Connor Huleatt (2 goals, 2 assists), with Wilfred Wright (goal, assist), Ian Fischer (goal), Martin Mendoza (goal), Andrew Rimes (goal) and Darren Baird (assist) also contributing to the offense. Mount Academy goalkeeper Tyler Winter had one save.

Onteora returned to action with a visit to MHAL opponent Spackenkill on Monday, March (too late for this edition of Hudson Valley One). The following day they headed to Ellenville for the team’s first rematch of the year.

Onteora girls’ soccer

The Onteora High School Eagles traveled to Ellenville for Mid-Hudson Athletic League action on Tuesday, March 16, falling behind early before fighting back with a pair of late goals to avoid a shutout in a 4-2 result.

Nicole Lane and Analie Ingalsbe each scored for the Eagles, with Chloe Maloney dishing an assist to the latter. Ava Lamb turned away eight shots on goal to keep the game close for Onteora.

The Eagles were ultimately upended by Sydney Franza (2 goals), Isabela Castro (goal, assist) and Sanaa Carter (goal). Ellenville keeper Gabriella Hind had four saves in her team’s win.

Onteora was off for over a week heading into a rematch at Ellenville on Wednesday, March 24. They return home for a visit from MHAL opponent Spackenkill two days later.

Scores for New Paltz and Saugerties sporting events were not submitted by the coaches and as a result, are not included in this weekly round-up.
