Sondra Sperber

Sondra Sperber, 93, originally of Newburgh, NY passed away on October 13, 2021, in New Paltz, New York.

Sondra was born December 16, 1927, in Newburgh, NY. She is the daughter of the late Irving Rubin and the late Etta (Grubman) Rubin, and sister of the late Herb Rubin.  She married Martin Sperber in 1951 and was predeceased by him in 1993.

She was Co-Owner/Partner/Teacher of The Valley School for preschoolers and children up to grade 2, including special education, in New Windsor, New York for over 25 years. After this, Sondra spent time doing many things, most importantly including teaching EuroDancing, a form of folk dancing without partners or with any partner. She was also a passionate traveler, visiting China, England, Austria, Peru, Mexico, Australia and Vietnam multiple times.


Sondra was active in community theater for a number of years, bringing to life the lead roles in Bye Bye Birdie as well as Anything Goes. An ardent theater- and concertgoer, she brought a sense of color, fashion, and flair to every occasion. She lived most recently at Woodland Pond since 2010, infusing every aspect with her characteristic enthusiasm and zest for life: singing, play reading, films, musical and social events. The pandemic was extremely difficult, as it has been for so many, with the isolation and lack of contact.

She is survived by her daughters: Lisa Sperber, of Bronx, NY, Meg (Sperber) Stafford of Littleton, MA; son-in-law Duke Stafford, and granddaughters Gale Stafford and Kate Stafford.
