MaryEllen Aliberte, 70, of West Hurley, NY, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2023 at home. She was born on October 15, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of Mary (Farina) Scotti and the late Alfred Scotti. MaryEllen was married to Frederick Jon Aliberte, they wed on July 19, 1981.
She was an Honor Student and Graduate of Our Lady of Peace High School in Brooklyn. MaryEllen later received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from SUNY New Paltz (back-to-back), graduating Summa Cum Laude in Speech Language Pathology.
She retired from Saugerties High School where she worked as a Speech Language Pathologist for 20 years. She previously had started the Audiology and Speech Language Departments at Benedictine Hospital and continued to work per diem for New Paltz in Early Childhood Intervention throughout her career. MaryEllen used her knowledge and training for the benefit of her hundreds of students over the years and her quick thinking saved 4 lives: her own daughter at a young age, 2 babies in public places and a young woman who was choking in the middle of a social situation. She burst through the crowd, did the Heimlich Maneuver perfectly and saved her life. This young woman had just had a baby of her own.
MaryEllen was a parishioner of St. John’s RC Church in Woodstock where she sang in the choir for 28 years. She was a coach of both the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams at Saugerties High School where she and her co-coach turned in a Championship Team. She enjoyed painting and dancing and took several art classes at the Woodstock School of Art and dance classes at the Alvin Ailey School of Dance.
She was an avid trapeze artist and won multiple amateur limbo competitions. She was an animal lover and adopted several dogs and cats over the years. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. MaryEllen was the best story teller on the planet and one of the funniest human beings ever, she often took over social situations with her well-developed sense of humor.
MaryEllen is survived by her husband Ric Aliberte, her children, Daniel Aliberte and Gina Marie Aliberte, her grandchildren, Alfred and Allison Aliberte, her mother, Mary Agnes Scotti, her siblings, Donald Scotti, Alfred Scotti, and Clare Garcia, as well as many other dear family members.
