Harley B. Avery, affectionately known as “Pop” to many, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2025, in Kingston, where he was also born on October 24, 1945. He was a lifetime Woodstock resident. His life was a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the joy found in simple pleasures.
Harley was the son of the late Vincent and Gertrude Snyder Avery and was predeceased by his sister, Helen Burns, in 2020. He leaves behind a close-knit family, including his brother-in-law George Burns, his nephews Brian and his wife Christina Burns, George Burns and his fiance Tammy, his grand nephews Sean and Avery, and many close and valued friends, all of whom will miss his warmth, guidance, and the laughter he brought into their lives.
From his youth, Harley was an active member of the Scouting community, an experience that instilled in him values of leadership and service. He graduated from Onteora Central Schools in the 1960s and soon after proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1964 to 1967, stationed in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, he continued to demonstrate his patriotism as a member of the Woodstock American Legion Post 1026.
Harley’s professional life was as varied as it was fulfilling. He began in the construction industry, where he learned the value of hard work and craftsmanship. Later, he found his niche as a property manager at the Woodstock Tennis Club, where he was a well-known and respected figure. His people skills shone brightly during his time bartending at various Woodstock locations, including Deanie’s Restaurant, where he made countless friends and shared stories over the bar. An avid sports fan, Harley relished the thrill of a good game, often indulging in friendly sports wagers and playing scratch-off tickets with a hopeful smile. His early years as a chef sparked a lifelong appreciation for great seafood, a passion he enjoyed sharing with those he loved.
Above all, Harley’s small but tight-knit family was paramount to him. He was a pillar of strength, a source of wisdom, and a generous heart who always put his family first. His presence was a comfort, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. Harley B. Avery lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his community, and his family.
