Gail Anne Moran, 75, loving partner, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. A lifelong activist, Gail was devoted to environmental, social justice and peace-driven causes, both locally, as well as far reaching. Sadly, she passed from this world on March 14, 2025.
Gail, the oldest of four beautiful sisters, was born in Utica, NY on March 2, 1950. Her family lived in upstate New York before moving to Orange County, California. She graduated from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana. She earned her Associate degree from Santa Ana College in 1970, as well as attended California State University-Long Beach.
Gail returned to New York as a young adult in 1974 with her adorable young son Brian. Although she loved many aspects of California, she had a strong desire to return to the nature and family of upstate NY. While in NY, she attended SUNY New Paltz and worked several jobs, including a 20-year career as the Warehouse & Trucking Manager at the Hudson Valley Federation of Food Co-Ops and nearly 20 years as a Sales Administration Assistant at SP Industries. Through her work, she made and maintained many dear friendships. Hardworking, humble, and willing to take on hard tasks, Gail proved to be a strong leader. During this time, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter Dominique.
Gail was a social and political activist in many causes. There was truly no cause too little or big. She attended marches and protests and “voted with her feet” in Washington DC, as well as locally up until her final days. She was passionate about protecting the Hudson River and its communities, as well as the rest of the planet. Conservation efforts were as integral to her as basic human needs. Serving over 20 years as part of the Beacon Sloop Club, as well as their treasurer for several years, she loved spending time protecting and enjoying the Hudson. In retirement, she also was a stalwart volunteer with several organizations, including Dutchess Outreach, working with the Children’s Clothing Closet, helping her neighbors-in-need with obtaining clothing, as well as other resources. Prior to her passing, she had just committed to more responsibilities with Dutchess Outreach.
Gail flourished being with nature. Long-time member of the New Paltz Community Gardens for Nutrition, Vassar Farms, as well as her current garden at Marist University, she nourished her loved ones through the years with vegetables from her own garden. She signed up for all seasons of the year. Hiking, camping, running, biking, sailing, cross-country skiing, and ice boating were all enjoyed. She also immensely enjoyed just regular walks with family, friends, and multiple walking clubs. In addition to these pursuits, she had the chance to travel to multiple countries including Mexico, Canada, and several countries in Europe. Gail was also happy curling up with a good book and belonged to multiple book clubs. She embraced learning and loved discussing books with her book clubs, as well as family and friends.
Gail’s heart was devoted to her family including her partner Steve, children Brian and Dominique, and grandchildren Sara and Kaitlyn. She gave her time and love selflessly to them. She was present for every birthday, holiday and run-of-the mill, anytime events. Whenever anyone needed her, she was happily there. Her gentle strength, community-spirit, and ability to put others before herself were truly without parallel. She leaves a lasting legacy on our hearts as well as on the spirit of the Hudson River Valley.
Gail is survived by her partner Steve, children Brian and his wife Carolyn, Dominique and her partner Michael, granddaughters Sara and Kaitlyn, sisters Nancy, Paula and her husband Rick, Tina and her husband Walt, nieces Tammi and Jaime, nephew Jaison, as well as an infinite number of friends and family.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 29 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home, Inc., 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12602.
