Plans for pet crematorium near Highland Elementary go up in smoke

Pet crematorium planned near Highland Elementary sparks controversy, legal and political pushback

from an image posted by Let Kids Breathe on Facebook

Days after a lawyer for a proposed pet crematorium development near Highland Elementary School chastised the surrounding community for its “extreme NIMBYism”, the “Let Our Kids Breathe” oppositional coalition announced the project application has been withdrawn.

“This outcome is a direct result of neighbors speaking up, standing together, and making clear that this project was not right for our town, especially not next to an elementary school.” wrote Let Our Kids Breathe representative Cathy Rought Jacobson. “But our work isn’t done. There is a hearing on Wednesday, August 20, at 7pm where the Town Board will consider changes to the zoning use table that would reclassify crematoriums—both pet and human—as ‘light industrial,’ potentially opening the door for similar proposals in the future.”
