Fuel oil spill in Woodstock raises concerns of well water pollution

This morning, near the Sawkill Creek, a Bottini Fuel truck overturned near a sharp turn at 30 Macdaniel Rd. in Woodstock, causing a spill serious enough to prompt Woodstock Town Supervisor Bill McKenna to take the closest town well offline. Witnesses reported home heating oil carried by the full or nearly-full truck had leaked out and entered the waterway of the Sawkill Creek.

The toxic release was significant enough to prompt a statement from Ulster County’s Director of Public Health, Eve Walter:

“The Ulster County Department of Health (DOH) is working with DEC to develop a plan for testing the Town of Woodstock water system and will update communities as more information becomes available… Additionally, DEC will work with DOH on a plan for individual well testing, with results provided to DOH to determine appropriate next steps.”

Woodstockers with private wells were told to call (845) 340-3010 if they had concerns or sought more information.

“The cleanup is being handled by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), New York Department of Transportation, Ulster County Emergency Management, and the Woodstock and Kingston Fire Departments,” Walter wrote.

Officials added that first responders were able to stop the leak roughly three hours after the first call for help went out.
