While approving a payment of $113,592.21 to the contractor installing the bike lane on the Empire State Trail bike/pedestrian path on Henry W. Dubois Drive in New Paltz, town council members discussed the state of that project, highlighting both its achievements and remaining challenges.

Council member Kitty Brown opened the discussion with an enthusiastic, “Well done,” reflecting the community’s anticipation for the completion of this long-awaited project. However, the town supervisor adopted a more cautious tone. “While the barriers are gone, the work is far from finished. We still have to navigate bureaucratic processes, and reimbursement issues remain unresolved. It’s not a fully complete project yet, but I’m pleased to say that people are able to use it now,” she explained, acknowledging the mixed emotions surrounding the project’s progress.

Esi Lewis chimed in with optimism, stating, “The bike lane looks beautiful, and it’s already attracting users, especially with this wonderful weather.” Her comments underscored the excitement in the community about the new recreational space.

Gotto took a moment to commend the town highway workers for their diligent efforts to tackle the lingering challenges that had previously prompted the installation of warning signs and barriers. These measures had been enforced to discourage usage while the project was underway. She highlighted that one significant hurdle was the existing town equipment’s inability to clear snow from the entirety of the bike lane. “They addressed every issue they physically could,” Gotto noted, “but unfortunately, they couldn’t move a telephone pole.” The supervisor also praised the cooperative efforts of workers from Central Hudson and other utility companies who promptly responded to assist with the project, emphasizing the collaborative spirit that has characterized the development of the bike lane.
