Kingston firefighters act fast, prevent deck blaze from spreading to home

(from Kingston Fire Department)

On Monday afternoon, the Kingston Fire Department responded to a reported fire near the intersection of Foxhall Avenue and Derrenbacher Street. The initial report, received through a direct call, described a potential garage fire. En route, firefighters were informed by dispatchers that multiple 911 calls had been made about the same incident.

Upon arrival — within two minutes of the first report — crews discovered the fire was located on the back deck of a residential property and was threatening to spread to the main structure. Firefighters acted quickly to extinguish the flames, successfully containing the blaze before it could reach the house. The scene was cleared approximately an hour later.

The department’s Fire Investigation Unit is currently working to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Kingston Police were also on site to assist during the emergency response.

This fire is the latest in a series of incidents requiring immediate and intensive action from the Kingston Fire Department. Over the past five days, firefighters have responded to four separate fires, including an April 26 three-alarm fire on West Pierpont Street.

Authorities are urging the public to report all emergencies by calling 911 rather than contacting fire stations directly. While firehouses are staffed, they lack dedicated personnel to receive emergency calls, and delays caused by direct calls to stations can negatively impact response times.
