Ulster County Courthouse in Kingston is no ordinary place

Built in 1818, the courthouse was erected on the same site where the original smaller limestone county courthouse stood (pictured below). Nearly two years after Kingston resident Dom Green was fatally shot in his home, Nyqwuan Monroe, 26, of Schenectady, was sentenced to 53 1/2 years to life in prison for the July 27, 2023 murder. The lengthy sentence is among the most severe in recent Ulster County history.

On January 23, an Ulster County jury unanimously convicted Monroe of two counts of Murder in the Second Degree, three counts of Burglary in the First Degree, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon. The verdict followed a week-long trial. Monroe was found to have traveled to Kingston on the day of the crime while illegally possessing a firearm. Along with two co-defendants, he forced his way into Green’s residence, where he fatally shot him in front of his girlfriend. Monroe then disposed of the firearm, later recovered with his DNA on it, before fleeing back to Schenectady. He and his accomplices were arrested the next day.

Prosecutors secured testimony from two co-defendants, Maliek Fredericks and Shaliza Dhanraj, in exchange for plea deals. Both were initially charged with murder but instead received reduced sentences — Dhanraj to one-to-three years and Fredericks to 3 1/2 years for burglary. Their leniency drew outrage from Green’s grieving family, who expressed anger over what they saw as an injustice.

The trial featured testimony from Kingston Police detectives, forensic experts, and key witnesses, including Green’s girlfriend. Assistant District Attorney Jenna Hastings emphasized Monroe’s violent past and called him a dangerous individual who deserved a severe sentence. District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji urged young people to recognize the consequences of violent behavior, stating that life in prison is the inevitable result of such actions. The case marked the first homicide trial in Ulster County prosecuted exclusively by two female assistant district attorneys.
