One victim is dead in Catskill after a fire at the intersection of Main and Union streets engulfed a building, causing it to partially collapse.
Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to a significant structure fire in Catskill on Sunday, Feb. 23, around 6:30 p.m. The blaze engulfed a row house, resulting in one fatality, according to the Catskill Fire Company. No other injuries were reported.
In a Facebook post, The Catskill Fire Company expressed condolences to the victim’s family and gratitude to the mutual aid departments that supported their efforts. Officials highlighted the challenging conditions firefighters faced, including a partial collapse on the first floor. A decision by Hudson’s fire chief to momentarily withdraw crews for safety assessment proved crucial, as it ensured firefighters could reenter the structure safely and continue battling the blaze.
Emergency crews from neighboring departments, including the Malden West and Saugerties fire departments, were called in to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent units. Fire officials stated that the flames originated in the basement of the three-story building before advancing to the roof.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and authorities had not released the identity of the deceased as of today.
