Kingston Kabs slams its last taxi door, shuts down after 31 years

For 31 years, Kingston Kabs shuttled countless passengers to medical appointments, grocery shopping, jobs, bus and train stations, and drinking establishments. In recent years, they rebranded as KC Med Trans and focused on medical transportation. But as of Friday, Jan. 17, the last cab door had slammed, as the business quietly shut down operations, leaving numerous riders stranded.

Sources told HV1 that the reason for the closing was not disclosed to employees, and staff worked unpaid prior to the closing of the business to keep vital community transportation services alive.

Though drivers reportedly did their best to notify customers of the imminent shutdown, many took the closing as a surprise.

“This has been a vital service to low-income people for grocery shopping, doctor visits, social and business activities,” said one former employee. They speculated the closing was due to a combination of the rise of ride sharing, rising transportation costs, and the popularity of the free UCAT bus service.

Not everyone saw Kingston Kabs as a vital resource for the community. At the time it closed, the business had a dismal 1.8 star rating on Google Reviews, replete with complaints about poor dispatcher service and frequent lateness.
