Handicap passenger van collides with SUV on Rt. 209 in Hurley

On Jan. 7, nine people and two vehicles were caught up in a collision on Rt. 209, according to a Jan. 17 statement by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, though some passengers were brought to the hospital due to their company policy requiring evaluation after any accident.

Deputies responded at around 2:48pm to find two damaged vehicles on Rt. 209 in the vicinity of Wynkoop Road in the Town of Hurley.

Police said their investigation pointed to the following scenario: A 32-year-old Kerhonkson man driving a 2017 Stao handicap passenger van with six passengers failed to yield right-of-way while making a left-hand turn from Wynkoop Road onto Rt. 209. He then collided with a 2015 Nissan Rogue driven southbound on Rt. 209 by a 55-year-old woman with a 23-year-old female passenger, both from Napanoch.

This intersection is notorious to Hurley residents for its elevated incidence of accidents.

“I live off of this intersection and many accidents. Maybe a reduction in speed through that intersection will help,” wrote Crystal C. Jacob on Facebook.

“Many fatal accidents there — when will the State Highway Administration finally take action,” asked Rich Ramsell.

Police reported no injuries.
