Authorities are investigating a fire that severely damaged the historic Nevele resort in Ellenville, New York, early Saturday morning. The blaze, reported at approximately 6:30 a.m., engulfed the main building, which included the lobby, kitchen, theater, and dining room. Firefighters from multiple departments contained the two-alarm fire by late afternoon, with one minor injury reported. Officials have labeled the incident “suspicious.”
This is the second fire at the property in under a year. In March 2024, a blaze destroyed the resort’s Winter Lodge, though the main building was unaffected. The resort, a once-thriving Borscht Belt destination, has been shuttered since 2009 and sold in September 2023 for redevelopment into a modern complex with lodging and housing.
The cause of Saturday’s fire remains under investigation by local and state authorities.
