“Hearing Marilyn Crispell play solo piano is like monitoring an active volcano,” wrote New York Times critic Jon Pareles 40 years ago. “She is one of a very few pianists who rise to the challenge of free jazz.”
Crispell continues to do what she does. This year, the longtime Woodstock resident was one of four recipients awarded the Jazz Masters Award by the National Endowment for the Arts.
