Kingston High School postponements
Though it’s unclear whether they were impacted by the latest wave of COVID-19 or the nationwide TikTok challenge which saw schools across the country on high alert on Friday, Kingston High School postponed a slate of games over the past few days.
“Due to the number of students not in attendance today and a shortage of chaperones and security, the sporting events scheduled for this evening and tomorrow have been postponed,” read a post on the district’s website on Friday, December 17.
Games postponed on Friday included both varsity and JV boys’ basketball games scheduled against Middletown at Kate Walton Field House, along with a modified wrestling match against Valley Central at J. Watson Bailey Middle School.
A varsity girls’ basketball home game against Guilderland the following day was also postponed, as was a track meet at Monroe-Woodbury.
As of press time no further games have been postponed.
Kingston High School swimming
The Kingston High School boys’ swimming and diving team posted its first win of the season last week, improving to a 1-5 record as of press time. The Tigers are performing well this season, with many of their losses due to their being undermanned.
On Monday, December 13, Kingston traveled to Monroe Woodbury for Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association action, falling 100-62.
Andrew Sammons (500 freestyle, 5:25.43), Mason Crowley (backstroke, 1:10.28) and Henry Shannon (breaststroke, 1:16.81) all posted individual wins for the Tigers.
Kingston’s first win of their 2021-22 campaign came at home two days later with an 89-64 win over Red Hook. It was the first meet of the season where the Tigers (9-man) faced a similarly-sized (8-man) opponent.
Shannon (200 freestyle, 2:04.03), Crowley (50 freestyle, 26.25), Sammons (100 breaststroke, 1:04.09), Ryan Goode (100 freestyle, 58.65) and Mark Lekaj (100 backstroke, 1:12.65) all posted individual wins for Kingston. Crowley, Shannon, Sammons and Lekaj also joined together for a first place finish in the 400 freestyle relay, finishing in a time of 3:53.10.
Kingston High School girls’ basketball
The Kingston High School girls’ varsity basketball team dropped its first game of the season last week, falling 60-40 to visiting Orange County Interscholastic Athletic Association foe Monroe-Woodbury on Monday, December 13.
Trista Lukaszewski scored all of her team-leading 14 points in the first half, with Kalia Hylton-Jackson (8 points, 8 rebounds) and Tajsheona Chavis (7 points, 7 rebounds) also contributing.
The Tigers led 9-8 after an uneventful first quarter before the Crusaders went on a tear, with the visitors leading 29-24 at the half.
Kingston fell to 4-1 on the 2021-22 campaign with the loss.
Kingston High School boys’ basketball
The Kingston High School boys’ varsity basketball team shook off the cobwebs of a nearly two-week break to slip by Monroe-Woodbury in a 53-49 win on Wednesday, December 15. The Tigers improved to 2-0 on the season with the victory.
Late heroics by Ryan McCardle and Ke’montae Thawe gave the Tigers the edge in the win. McCardle (7 rebounds) led Kingston with 17 points, seven coming in the final frame. Kevin Andrade (12 points), Thawe (11 points, 4 steals) and Demario Smith (8 points, 11 rebounds) also contributed to the win.
Monroe was led by Matthew Omitiran (14 points) and reserve Bryce Williams (11 points).
The layoff was due in part to a pair of games being postponed due to quarantine. Kingston’s next scheduled game is a crossover visit to Pine Bush on Thursday, December 23.
Kingston High School wrestling
The Kingston High School varsity wrestling team dropped a trip to Newburgh Free Academy 54-9 on Wednesday, December 15. Each team picked up a win by forfeit, including the Tigers’ Bryan Martinez at 285 pounds.
Myles Gordon was Kingston’s sole win on the mat, earning a 9-7 decision over Anthony Manzi at 172 pounds.
The Tigers are scheduled to host Monroe-Woodbury on Tuesday, December 21.
Onteora High School wrestling
The Onteora High School varsity wrestling team nearly swept visiting John S. Burke Catholic in a 66-6 win.
Payton Kothe (102 pounds, forfeit), LilyKate Brosnan (118 pounds, forfeit), Roberto Gomez (126 pounds, pin, 1:33), Thomas Shields (132 pounds, pin, 0:39), Steven Blakely (138 pounds, forfeit), Brenon Thiel (145 pounds, forfeit), Jack Longyear (152 pounds, forfeit), Riley Hegeman (160 pounds, forfeit), Wyatt Konjas (172 pounds, pin, 5:17), Griffin Alterio (189 pounds, forfeit) and Logan Storey (215 pounds, forfeit).
The Eagles’ sole loss came at 285 pounds where Burke’s Kenny Bell pinned Ronan Hegeman in 39 seconds.
New Paltz High School wrestling
The New Paltz High School varsity wrestling team posted a narrow 33-24 victory over visiting Rondout Valley on Wednesday, December 15.
The Huguenots got wins from Rebecca Brennan (118 pounds, forfeit), Justin Coiteux (138 pounds, forfeit), Aidan Rice (145 pounds, decision, 5-0), Cole Cuppett (152 pounds, forfeit), Tomasz Zaborowski (215 pounds, forfeit) and Logan Ormond (285 pounds, pin, 4:20).
Saugerties High School wrestling
The Saugerties High School varsity wrestling team traveled to Beacon High on Tuesday, December 14, winning 51-24.
Winning for the Sawyers were Lucas Carter (102 pounds, forfeit), Savannah Tittelbeck (110, forfeit), Isaiah Hockx (126 pounds, forfeit), Anthony Denier (132 pounds, decision, 6-0), Jackson Bucci (145 pounds, fall), Christian Hockx (152 pounds, fall), James Burns (160 pounds, forfeit), Sean Sasso (172 pounds, forfeit) and James Bucci (189 pounds, fall).
The next match on the Sawyers’ calendar is a visit from Cornwall scheduled for Tuesday, January 4.
