Family of Woodstock received a $1,000 donation from Spectrum last Friday to support its domestic violence programs. Family of Woodstock is a network of individuals, paid and volunteer, whose mission is to provide confidential and fully accessible crisis intervention, information, prevention and support services to address the needs of individuals and families. The scope of the agency’s vision allows us to bring to bear resources to address a broad spectrum of human problems.

Attending the event were state senator Michelle Hinchey; Michael Berg, executive director of Family of Woodstock; Karen Storch, program director for the Washbourne Domestic Violence Shelter; Emily Trotter-Bodie, Family of Woodstock program director for the non-residential domestic violence program; and Jill Luther, senior director of state government affairs for Charter Communications.

“In communities across New York State, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in reports of domestic violence, highlighting an already critical need to support the vital work of local organizations that deliver lifesaving services to victims and their families,” said Senator Hinchey.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has not only increased the amount of domestic violence that we are seeing in our community, but has also put limitations on the number of people we can serve in our domestic violence shelter. Since we can no longer mix families, we have had to lower the occupancy of our program by 25 percent,” said Berg. “As a result, the generous donation by Spectrum is especially appreciated this year. Domestic violence is a serious problem in our community, and we need the support from not only the government, but the business community and general population to address the needs of survivors and to help perpetrators change their behavior. Family would again like to thank Spectrum for their vision of a more peaceful and healthy community.”

“Spectrum is proud to lend support to organizations like Family of Woodstock and the important work they do in communities,” said Camille Joseph, group vice president of state government affairs for Charter Communications. “Together, we’re building stronger communities where our customers and employees live and work across America.”

Nick Henderson was raised in Woodstock starting at the age of three and attended Onteora schools, then SUNY New Paltz after spending a year at SUNY Potsdam under the misguided belief he would become a music teacher. He became the news director at college radio station WFNP, where he caught the journalism bug and the rest is history. He spent four years as City Hall reporter for Foster’s Daily Democrat in Dover, NH, then moved back to Woodstock in 2003 and worked on the Daily Freeman copy desk until 2013. He has covered Woodstock for Ulster Publishing since early 2014.
