Phoenicia – Benson B. Caswell, 71 of Main Street died Thursday October 22, 2020 at Golden Hill Rehabilitation Center. An area resident since 2004, he formerly made his home in Woodstock. Ben was born February 20, 1949 in Poughkeepsie and grew up in the central New York town of Rome. He was an alumnus of Rochester Institute of Technology’s photography program. Ben was a people person who had a keen eye to capture creative moments of folks on the street. More recently he also freelanced with the Woodstock Times. Additionally he had a photography dark-room business for developing prints for a variety of vendors. He was talented at setting up and helping to curate gallery shows at the Woodstock Artist Association and Museum. He is described as being one of the most gentle persons who was always looking for the opportunity to help others. He had a knack for fixing things, enjoyed browsing yardsales for treasures, and simply enjoyed listening to a wide variety of music.
Surviving are his wife Mizuyo Aburano , a son Kai both of Phoenicia and sister Wendy Caswell of NC.
A gathering to Celebrate the Life of Ben will take place on Saturday October 24 from 4pm to 6pm at the E. B. Gormley Funeral Home 87 Main St. Phoenicia. Private burial will take place in the family plot at the Higgins Bay Cemetery.
