A proposed cellular tower at the Mount Marion Fire House on Kings Highway in Saugerties aroused considerable controversy at a recent zoning board of appeals (ZBA) meeting, councilman Mike Ivino reported at the October 7 town-board meeting. “It’s a very controversial issue for the residents in that area right now, and if you are a stakeholder in that I urge you to attend those meetings,” he said. The next ZBA meeting is set for November 2, 7 p.m., in the Senior Center.
According to the minutes of the July ZBA meeting, Verizon Wireless and Tarpon Towers II are proposing a 120-foot single-pole tower. Verizon’s application states that the tower will improve service in the area, and that space on the tower would be available to local government and such public services as police and fire departments. The full zoning variance, as described in the ZBA’s March meeting, includes a use variance, as the tower is not an allowed use in the hamlet residential zone, and required area variances for the front, rear and side yard dimensions.
