A 26-year-old Saugerties man is in jail after police say he assaulted a police officer responding to a dispute.
Yesterday evening at 7:19 p.m., Saugerties Police responded to a 911 call reporting a dispute at 95 Pine Grove School Road in the Town of Saugerties. According to police, the dispute involved Louis Terpening and a female, who said Terpening intentionally damaged her property.
When the responding officer attempted to take Terpening into custody, a struggle ensued. Police said Terpening struck the officer on the head several times and kicked the officer, causing injury to the officer. Backup officers assisted in taking Terpening into custody. The officer’s injuries were treated at the scene paramedics from DIAZ Ambulance and then transported by police to the hospital for further evaluation.
Terpening was arrested and charged with felony assault of a police officer, fourth-degree criminal mischief and obstructing governmental administration. He was remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail.
