Glo Spa has taken over the former Riverrock building on Ricks Road in Woodstock and will be offering an abundance of services from massages to saunas to beauty treatments. The public is invited to a grand opening on Friday, May 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Proprietors Linda Dubilier and Debbie Dougan have rented one sundrenched room to Jennifer Donovan as an annex to the popular Kingston hairdressing salon Le Shag. Donovan, a theatrical stylist who also did hair and makeup for American Ballet Theater, has drawn several New York City stylists upstate to work at the Woodstock location, Le Shag Capsule, which will also offer barbering for men.
Glo Spa’s initial hours will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week. Several massage therapists from Riverrock will be working in the five single massage rooms and one couples room. There are two esthetician rooms for waxing, facials, microderm chemical peels, eyelash lifting, and other beauty treatments. The owners are hoping to bring in a doctor for injectables and laser treatments.
One room is devoted to manicures and pedicures, with views through the windows of the forests and fields surrounding the building. The wet room contains a molded, couch-like water table with nozzles above it, aimed at the body’s chakras. The water also rinses off mud wraps, the salt from body scrubs, and applications of CBD, the legal part of the hemp plant, a remedy for muscle pain.
At a spa fair, Dougan and Dubilier tried out an oxygen chair, which blows oxygen into the nose. “I was exhausted from the fair,” recalled Dubilier. “I sat down for 10 minutes, and I got up completely energized. We decided to buy one.” In addition, the treatment is said to reduce anxiety, improve the capacity of the lungs, and encourage deep breathing.
There are separate locker rooms for men and women, each containing a steam room and an infrared sauna, said to help with seasonal affective disorder, skin conditions such as eczema, and autoimmune diseases, including Lyme.
A relaxation room offers a place to drink tea or water while unwinding before treatment and easing back out to the world afterwards.
Le Shag Capsule will be a three-chair salon, plus the barber chair. Stylists from Warren Tricomi, a New York salon where Donovan worked recently, have signed on to work with her. Sundays will include visits from a barber from Pugsly’s, the popular Kingston vintage-style shop, venturing into a modern setting for the first time.
“So many people in the community have come together to help us,” said Dubilier. “It’s been an emotional experience for me. Everyone wanted it for the town.” Art from Elena Zang’s gallery in Shady hangs on the walls. Mirrors and lighting in the soothing, minimalist décor were created by October Design in Hudson. (Some of the mirror frames are made of reclaimed harness leather.) The reception area offers skin care products, elixirs, jewelry, and other items by local craftspeople, such as handbags made of repurposed sails from Kingston design shop Eight Bells.
“We love to join forces with other small businesspeople,” said Dougan, who founded Woodstock’s Women Empowering Women networking group.
The May 4 opening will involve bubbles, cookies, tours, and giveaways, with swag bags of samples from companies doing business with Glo.
