Around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 16, the Kingston Police Department arrested 30-year-old Quameik Byrd of Kingston following a report of a man allegedly abusing a dog and carrying a knife on Cedar Street in midtown.
Witnesses stated that Byrd was seen striking and kicking a young puppy and dragging it by its leash, even lifting the dog into the air in this manner. When bystanders attempted to intervene to protect the animal, Byrd allegedly produced a knife and threatened to harm them and their families. At least one of the individuals he allegedly threatened was a minor under the age of 17.
Byrd was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree due to a previous conviction. He has also been charged with several misdemeanors, including fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, four counts of second-degree menacing, endangering the welfare of a child, and overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals under New York State Agriculture and Markets Law. Additionally, he faces a violation charge for disorderly conduct.
Following his arrest, Byrd was transported to Kingston Police Department headquarters. While in custody, he reportedly struck a concrete wall with his fist, which resulted in an injury that required treatment. He was taken to HealthAlliance Hospital, where he was treated and released for a fractured finger. After receiving medical care, he was returned to the police department for processing and was held for arraignment in Kingston City Court.
The Ulster County SPCA assisted in the investigation. The dog involved in the incident is now in their care and custody.
